This album is not about Disco music. The Disco (and pre-Disco) era is a starting point for the existence of this album. Disco begat House, Hip-Hop, and some strains of Post-Punk, all of which mutated into new forms depending on the dancefloors or venues they appeared in. They Hate Change’s perspective on hip-hop keeps this history in mind, constantly pushing our own sound in new directions, often driven by our experiences in live performance. Below are some key direct influences on They Hate Change’s sound, style, and thought process from 2021 - Present. You will begin to see the throughlines and connections very quickly (if they aren’t already apparent).

Malcolm McClaren & The World’s Famous Supreme Team

DJ duo and radio hosts from New York City, who worked with producer Malcolm McClaren on some of the first hip-hop records. Their radio show on WBLS “The World's Famous Supreme Team Show” featured the duo playing breaks, freestyling, doing shoutouts and taking calls from local listeners. The records they created with Malcolm McLaren are considered early hip-hop classics, and have been sampled numerous times.

Massive Attack on “Blues & Soul” (1991)

After The Wild Bunch, 3D, Daddy G, & Mushroom went on to form the group Massive Attack, after encouragement from Neneh Cherry to create an album.
The group were managed by Neneh’s partner Cameron McVey. Shara Nelson, the featured Vocalist on "Look of Love” was also a member of Massive Attack during the making of their first album "Blue Lines", and provided vocals throughout the album.

Sound System from Bristol who took inspiration from American styles like R&B, Post-Disco and early Hip-Hop, and mixed the styles with UK flavors, approaching the styles from a Caribbean sound system perspective.

This aligns with They Hate Change's DJ background; Playing UK styles (and other left-field American styles) mixed with a Florida hip-hop and electronic perspective. This is how the "Gulf Coast Sound” was created. In the same way that the Wild Bunch’ influence spawned Trip-Hop, as well as a playing a big part in UK Street Soul.

One of The Wild Bunch’s only songs to be released before disbandment, “The Look of Love” (1987) forecasts not only Massive Attack’s later sound, but also the sound of Soul II Soul, sound system operating in a similar fashion to the Wild Bunch, only in London instead of Bristol.

The song features a female Lover’s Rock-style vocal over a breakbeat loop, similar to the Street Soul style arising in the UK around the same time.

Soul II Soul’s hit debut album “Club Classics Vol. One” features production from Nelee Hooper, former Wild Bunch member.

Cameron McVey was in a group called Morgan - Mcvey, who had a record called Looking Good Diving. The B-Side was an edit called “Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch” and featured Mcvey’ partner Neneh Cherry.

The B-Side featuring Neneh was later remixed and became Neneh's hit single "Buffalo Stance", which samples elements of Malcolm McClaren’s "Buffalo Girls", an early hip-hop record that featured the World's Famous Supreme Team.

In 1990, The KLF released “Chill Out”, a pioneering “ambient-house” record, conceptually rooted in travelling through the Gulf Coast of the United States.

“The '80s became the '90s, House became mainstream dance and many, tired of the all-nighters, sought escape in Ambient House, a form of meditative sampled music without the ear-crushing beat. Late in 1990 a faceless group called the KLF released a peculiar LP entitled Chill Out. Wrapped in a sleeve featuring sheep in blissful country fields, its contents were a karmic blend of pedal steel guitar, Fleetwood Mac samples, Elvis Presley, Acker Bilk, sonar blips, waves, wind and birds. Plus, of course, sheep. It sounded terrific, close enough to New Age and Ambient music to be compared to them, but stimulating enough to be considered an advance, a progression on something that many considered passé.”
